The festival has a connection with the mythological story of Holika, the aunt of Prahlad. It is said that Hiranyakashipu, an atheistic demon wanted to kill his theistic son, Prahlad. He forced him to enter the fire with Holika who was supposed to be immune from the effect of fire. But contrary to the expectation of all, Holika was burnt and Prahlad emerged quite safe. Since then this festival is celebrated as a mark of triumph of truth over untruth; virtue over the vice and good over evil.
Young men and children collect wood, cow-dung cakes and make a heap of them. They set fire to it at the auspicious hour of the night.
