Different communities have different colourful festivals in India. Though all the festivals do not enjoy the same importance in all parts of the country or among all the people, they are symbolic of unity behind diversity. Most of the festivals have their origin in the mythological past. They are associated with religious functions. Dussehra, Diwali, Eid-ul-Fitr, Muharram, Christmas and Easter, are all religious festivals.

Among the festivals that celebrate the time of the year, Holi is the most important festival in India. Holi is a spring festival. It is the festival of the Hindu masses. It is celebrated when the farmers become free from their work in the fields. Holi is a social festival and the people of other communities also share joy and merriment.

The festival has a connection with the mythological story of Holika, the aunt of Prahlad. It is said that Hiranyakashipu, an atheistic demon wanted to kill his theistic son, Prahlad. He forced him to enter the fire with Holika who was supposed to be immune from the effect of fire. But contrary to the expectation of all, Holika was burnt and Prahlad emerged quite safe. Since then this festival is celebrated as a mark of triumph of truth over untruth; virtue over the vice and good over evil.

Young men and children collect wood, cow-dung cakes and make a heap of them. They set fire to it at the auspicious hour of the night. People dance and sing around this agja heap as the flames leap up. It marks the beginning of the gay festival. The next morning is the day of Holi. Children love playing with colours using pichkaris and water balloons, filled with coloured water. Even the passers-by are not left by the naughty children.

The low-standard and vulgar people indulge in mud-throwing practices. In the afternoon, they all enjoy the festival of Holi. They prepare delicious food items and dishes according to their pocket and feed their friends and relations. There is joy and mirth everywhere. It is the festival in which there are no social differences between the rich and the poor. People forget their day-to-day worries of life. It is rightly said that ” Variety is the spice of life.” Life without change and diversion becomes monotonous and dull. This festival offers opportunities for change.

However, it is very regrettable that people drink wine and take other intoxicants and behave very rudely. Some people sing vulgar songs and take out obscene processions. Sometimes, people throw coloured water even on other religious persons like Muslims and Christians. It leads to communal troubles. We should not injure the feelings of others. We should try our best to discourage these evils in order to maintain the sanctity of the festival.
