Mahatma Gandhi is one of the greatest men in the world. I like him the most. His full name is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He is popularly known as Gandhiji. The political career of Gandhiji is a matter of great interest. We call him the Father of the nation. Gandhiji was born on 2nd October 1869 at Porbandar. He belonged to an old Bania family. Gandhi’s father Karamchand was Hindu and his mother Putlibai was from a Vaishnava Hindu family. He was the youngest son of his parents. His mother was a religious woman. Bapu learned a lot of good things from his mother.

Gandhiji was not a very bright student at school. But he was very honest even in his childhood. He was shy by nature and good at heart. Gandhiji was married when he was in high school. Even as a student he was a man of character. Once he was punished by his headmaster. Gandhiji himself said that he did not pay proper attention to his handwriting. He read Sanskrit with great interest. He was always in favour of studying more than one language. At the age of 17, he passed his matriculation examination. He left for England to study law in 1887 and lived a noble and ideal life there. He himself cooked his meals.

Gandhiji returned home in 1891. His public life started with his visit to South Africa. He went there in 1915 in connection with a case. He fought hard against the white people of South Africa. Gandhiji never liked British rule. He always supported the country’s freedom.
